AdverTool
  • Search alliance between Yahoo! and Microsoft
Have you ever hear about this alliance?
Well, for those uninformed, is just the intention of these two big companies of join forces against other players such as Google in the search and advertisement fields.
For this purpose, during this year Yahoo! is dropping its search marketing system and even its search system to adopt Microsoft’ services, Bing and adCenter, respectively.
How this affects current Yahoo! users?
During the migration period, all the users are going to receive a letter (an email actually) with instructions to update their systems, and a grace period will be open.
Is AdverTool prepared for this migration?
Yes, it is. All our users will transparently switch from one system to other without noticing.
For more information about this announce please visit this article from Microsoft and this other from Yahoo!.
  • The open source business model that fits to the project
It wasn’t a trivial decision to open the code of this project, and even harder is to choose the right business model for it.

I advance you that in this post you won’t find the final business model, but yes a brief analysis of other succesful OSS projects we are taking as a model. (three from Spain and other three from the rest of the world)
SugarCRM: Offers different editions; the community edition is free to download, and then you can jump to professional ($360/user/year) or enterprise ($600/user/year), each of last two with extra features and support.
    http://sugarcrm.com
Redhat: The business model of this company is based on paid subscriptions to get access to updates, 24/7 support, training and certification.
    http://www.redhat.com/
Wordpress: Following the SaaS paradigm, Wordpress lets you host your blog in their servers for free, but if you need to tweak the CSS or use a custom domain, then a yearly fee needs to be given in exchange of these premium features.
    http://wordpress.com/
Abiquo (Spanish): As with SugarCRM, Abiquo releases its product in both editions: open source and free and entreprise with extra features but closed source. You can acquire enterprise edition paying a subscription fee in a yearly basis.
    http://www.abiquo.com/
OpenBravo (Spanish): Similar to the Redhat model, provides paid subscriptions to access premium content from early downloads to updates, support and training.
    http://www.openbravo.com/
EyeOS (Spanish): The project offers customizations over the standard product to suits the needs of their clients. Moreover they provide an enterprise version with additional features, technical support among other services.
